Story
Leigh-on-Sea Royal British Legion member Evelyn Gould (nee Passingham), who is presently being cared for at Elizabeth House in Hadleigh, was born in Chadwell Heath/Romford on 15th November 1923. Her father was a civil servant in London and her mother was a housewife.
The family moved to Southend when Evelyn was about 7 years old because there were lots of houses being built in SE Essex. The family lived initially in Victoria Avenue, but later moved to Ashley Drive. At this time Evelyn met and became lifelong friends with Doris Fraser, I understand that their respective Fathers played snooker at the Constitutional Club in Leigh.
Evelyn went to the Alexandra College in Crowstone Road and then later attended Clarks College in London where Evelyn trained as a shorthand typist. When war broke out Evelyn joined the WRAF and was stationed at various Barrage Balloon sites in Wales. At some point she became pen friends with husband-to-be Dennis, who at that time was in the Tank Corps. The pair were married at St Clement’s Church in Leigh in the summer of 1949.
Dennis, who has previously worked for Kodak in Wembley later found employment with Fords at Dagenham, although sadly he died in 2003 at the age of 81. Evelyn has 2 sons and 4 grandchildren and has been a Member of TRBL since November 2000.
