Hold the date! May 6th-9th 2021 come rain or shine the best WW2 and VE Celebration possible will be happening on Southend Pier. The HMS Leigh team are already hard at work to make this a reality and we would love you to be involved.
HMS Leigh – Guardian of the Thames is a community lead heritage and arts project that aims to connect people of all ages with the history of HMS Leigh aka Southend Pier during WW 2. Supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the Arts Council and Southend Borough Council this project has been hugely enriched by the opportunities that have been offered by the project being extended. It is true that not being able to hold the original event on Southend Pier in May 2020 was a huge blow. However, the wonderful response to the online festival that happened instead HMS Leigh Make Do and Mend. 140,000 people engaged with the project online in May 2020. This interest has generated a wonderful outpouring of largely unknown source materials. The HMS Leigh Steering Group believe that this offered a huge opportunity to teach local history at a completely different level and inspire younger generations to follow in the footsteps of those resourceful men and women who together turned a pleasure pier into a naval battle station during WW2.
